Tech Tip: Avoid psychological spam

Psychological SpamSpammers employ a large array of techniques to get you to click on their links. One of these techniques is the use of psychology to eliminate your skepticism. Spammers attempt to create an air of familiarity in other to get you to read their messages and follow their links.

One popular technique spammers utilize is to use your online contacts as a point of entry with their name included in the spam subject or message itself. This could mean that somehow your friend’s address book has been compromised and your friend may have no knowledge of the message being sent. Spammers also try tricks such as referring to you as “friend” and using a conversational tone in emails to reduce skepticism. A lot of spam sent to this blog usually compliments our articles in order to seem genuine but are in fact only trying to get comments that include links to their websites approved.

Be very weary of these kind of psychological spam techniques. They are used to unwittingly spread spam messages across the internet. Instead of the previous robotic sounding messages spam is evolving to be more human like and more difficult to detect. Also remember that spam is often associated with other malicious activities such as the spreading of viruses and schemes to swindle others out of money. All popular online email providers allow you to configure junk mail settings to prevent spam from inundating your inbox. Ensure that your junk mail settings are strong enough to catch most spam but beware of the false positives – genuine emails that may be flagged as spam and end up in your junk mail.
